Your Guide to Starting a Self-care Routine in St. Louis

Your Guide to Starting a Self-care Routine in St. Louis

As this post goes live in January, I’m sure you’ve had New Year’s resolutions and goals in mind. Whether your goals are rooted in self-care or not, carving out time for a routine focused all on you can help you stay relaxed, calm, and on-track for all of your plans for the year! It’s so easy to stop putting yourself first as soon as life gets busy–your family, your career, your home, your responsibilities all eventually take over and leave little time for yourself, right?

Imagine how energized and empowered you’ll feel with a routine that nurtures your mind, body, and soul, even when the chaos of everyday life tries to take over. So let me help you prioritize yourself in the new year and keep those self-care rituals going all year long!

Self-care in St. Louis

1. Define What Self-care Means to You

Self-care looks different for everyone. It might mean spending a quiet morning reading or journaling in your favorite coffeeshop (Living Room and Maypop are my favorites!), taking in an evening yoga session at Shanti Yoga or dancing your booty off at Yes Honey, or even saying yes to an empowering experience like a photoshoot with yours truly.

Start your self-care routine by reflecting on what relaxes AND recharges you and make a list of activities or places that fit your vibe. It’s a lot easier to actually get into a routine when you have a clear vision of what you need and want.

2. Start Small to Build Momentum

Going all-in from the start is a great path to burnout, which is kind of the exact opposite of what you’re going for here…don’t try to overhaul your entire life, just take small steps to make changes little by little. Dedicate ten minutes a day to meditation, write a positive affirmation for yourself each morning, or take a walk through Forest Park once a week.

Small wins build consistency and momentum, which will make it easier to actually stick to a routine and make progress.

3. Set Boundaries and Prioritize Your Time

Your self-care is non-negotiable. It’s not selfish to take care of yourself, so set boundaries with your time. Don’t feel guilty about saying no to things that don’t fill your cup, and honestly, taking care of yourself will allow you to give your best to other. You deserve time for just you, so take it when you need it.

4. Create Rituals You Look Forward to

If you’re dreading your self-care…you’re doing it wrong! Your ritual shouldn’t just be a boring routine that’s one more item on the to-do list. Create a ritual that feels intentional and makes you feel special. Even simple tasks can feel indulgent: a Sunday night skin and spa routine at home with sustainable products from Lark Skin Co. or Social Goods Marketplace, both here in St. Louis; lighting a candle from Glow Candle Co. and enjoying some Big Heart Tea before bed; dancing to your favorite songs while you water your plants (that you bought at Maypop)! Have fun with it, and you’ll be excited to stick with the routine!

5. Incorporate Local STL Gems

Support small businesses while you get your self-care on! St. Louis has some really incredible businesses focused on care and wellness. Unwind with a massage or acupuncture at Golden Door, relax and rejuvenate with a facial from Sunset Skin, get glammed up with Velvet Room. Visit the Botanical Garden for a gorgeous escape outdoors, treat yourself with some lingerie from Pêches or a Boudie City photoshoot! St. Louis is your oyster, experience everything this city has!

6. Celebrate Your Progress

Acknowledge how you feel and how far you’ve come! Even the smallest steps are progress to becoming the best version of yourself, so celebrate! Self-care is an ongoing ritual, so even if you drop the routine for weeks, months, or years you can always come back to it and start again. That’s still progress, and you can even reward yourself with more self-care!
